Food soothed an ache she couldn’t name, a pain she couldn’t describe. In this memoir, Dr. Hilda Lee shares the story of her unhealthy relationship with food, and offers strategies for recovery to others lost in the same maze in which she wandered for so many years. Hilda was a powerful professional woman seemingly in complete control of her destiny—but she harbored a shameful secret she was a compulsive, out-of-control binge eater. She secretly consumed massive amounts of food, sometimes unable to stop until she fell into a deep, almost coma-like sleep. Filled with shame and self-loathing, she fruitlessly sought a solution to her compulsive eating problem in diet plans and weight-loss books, thinking she simply needed to find the right diet and exert stronger will-power. Tragically, each diet led her deeper into the darkness and shame of binge eating. Then everything changed. In 1998, at over 300 pounds, Hilda was diagnosed with an eating disorder more common than anorexia and bulimia combined, affecting more than eight million Americans BINGE EATING DISORDER. Confronting this diagnosis, she started on a journey toward healing and health. She sold her beloved dental practice and returned to graduate school in search of a deeper understanding of the causes and possible solutions to this destructive pattern of eating. Hilda’s healing and transformation allowed her to shed emotional burdens far heavier than the weight she once carried. Now, her deepest desire is that her book, In the Labyrinth of Binge Eating, will serve as a guide to help others who suffer as she did.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND. As someone who's recovered from BED (and yeah, some days are better than others) I must say that Hilda Dulin Lee has done a masterful job of explaining what it's like to have binge eating disorder. This book should be required reading for health care practitioners who work with those suffering with BED. And her compelling story pulls you through to the end of the book (which is in itself an achievement). Both useful and inspirational - especially to those in midlife - who wonder if there is hope. THERE IS! There have been "memoirs" by those with anorexia (and bulimia), but Lee's book is useful to the greater numbers of people whose challenge is overeating.Product details

Finally, a non-fiction book that is well written and keeps your interest from beginning to end. The book is really helpful to more than just binge eaters. I have had anxiety disorder for over 35 years and Hilda Lee's insights are surely helpful to me. The book is also Hilda Lee's autobiography. She touches the soul and innermost fears of us all. At times it is extremely painful to read. But eventually there is a loving, happy ending.

The most thorough examination of Binge Eating Disorder I have ever found.
This is a really good book. She goes into a lot of detail about the science of things that I sort of scanned through, but her journey has a lot of golden nuggets in it that I really appreciated.
"In the Labyrinth of Binge Eating" by Hilda D. Lee is a powerful book written with courage and the hard-won knowledge of the inside of the "labyrinth". It does not promise quick cure but, instead, gives an honest account of the two-steps-forward-one-step-back process of self-discovery which can lead to relief and peace. I highly recommend it for anyone with binge eating disorder and also for those trying to overcome habits and addictions that keep them locked to the past.
Hilda's well-written book about binge eating is informative and gives a profound appreciation of what the binge eater goes through on the way to recovery. There are many helpful sections to aid a person with this type of eating disorder; all of it offers encouragement and hope on every step of this difficult and painful journey. I am grateful to Glenn who remained by her side giving her support and advice as needed. Reading about Hilda's personal experiences is not only enlightening but also a guide to understanding the person who was my excellent dentist and now is a valued friend. Her determination and courage are inspiring to a person struggling with any health-threatening condition. Ginger K. Nelson
"In the Labyrinth of Binge Eating" is a powerful memoir of a most painful and extraordinary journey into the unspoken world of binge eating.
Hilda Lee gives us a gift by revealing her raw self through this lifelong struggle. Her openness to have us experience her hidden world is one of the bravest things I have encountered! I could not put the book down!
While the book deals with the aspects of bingeing, I came to believe in the incredible help it could be to all of us that struggle with various forms of addictions, in practice and principle. Her description of her negative self talk could have been me criticizing myself! The methods she used to redirect her mind and body along the way are remarkable tools for all of us (especially the stones)!
I am grateful to Hilda Lee for writing this book as it is now one of MY tools in my journey in my personal labyrinth.
My daughter asked me to read In the Labyrinth of Binge Eating. I did and found it to be an amazing read. I am not a healthy eater, but I don’t consider myself a binge eater. However, reading Hilda Lee’s book was truly an awe-inspiring experience. Her writing is superb and her story telling is a treasure to behold. This book does not cast a shadow of judgment on the reader. Instead, she allows us to follow all of her personal triumphs and tragedies as she expertly weaves a path to self discovery. Clearly, you can replace binge eating with any vice, addiction, or obsession, (such as alcoholism, gambling, spending, etc.,) and realize this book was written to help you make peace with your own demons. If Hilda’s purpose in writing this book was to have a positive impact in people’s lives, then I say she has far exceeded her goal. Well done, Mrs. Lee!
